Meditation

At St Mary’s, every class takes part in a daily meditation following lunch. Beginning with the gentle sound of the prayer bell, children are invited to pause, become calm and attentive, and open themselves to God’s presence.

Rooted in the Christian tradition of contemplative prayer, this time is not focused on speaking or activity, but on simply being with God and listening. Music may be used to create a prayerful atmosphere, helping children to enter into silence and stillness.

These daily opportunities for contemplation nurture pupils’ capacity to listen with their hearts, deepen their awareness of God’s presence, and recognise that prayer is not only speaking to God but also listening to Him.

Our daily prayer of stillness is:

Open my eyes, Lord.

Help me to see your face.

Open my ears, Lord.

Help me to hear your voice.

Open my heart, Lord.

Help me to love like you.
