At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Religious Education, Values and Ethics (REVE) is at the heart of our curriculum and school life. As a Catholic school, we recognise Religious Education as the core subject because it expresses and explores our Christian vision of the human person and underpins the whole educational experience.
In accordance with the requirements of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, 10% of curriculum time is dedicated to Religious Education. This is in addition to the time devoted to prayer and liturgy.
Through REVE, we seek to fulfil our mission of:
“Learning and Loving, Caring and Sharing through the Message of Christ.”
Our curriculum aims to develop religiously literate and engaged young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills to reflect spiritually, think ethically and theologically, and recognise the importance of faith in everyday life.
To Know You More Clearly
Our REVE curriculum is based on the Religious Education Directory: To Know You More Clearly, published by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. Through this curriculum, pupils explore the mystery of God, the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church, and the relationship between faith and life.
Learning is organised through six curriculum branches:
These branches help pupils progressively deepen their understanding of Scripture, Catholic belief, prayer, morality, the Church’s mission and their response to God’s call.
Dialogue and Encounter
As part of the Dialogue and Encounter branch, pupils learn about other Christian traditions, Judaism, Islam, Dharmic religions and other worldviews. This helps children develop respect, understanding and the skills needed to engage in meaningful dialogue within an increasingly diverse society.
Faith in Action
Our REVE curriculum encourages pupils to make connections between faith and daily life. Through reflection, discussion, prayer and action, children are supported to:
- Grow in their relationship with God.
- Develop an understanding of Catholic beliefs and values.
- Think deeply about life’s big questions.
- Recognise the dignity of every person.
- Develop a sense of awe and wonder in God’s creation.
- Respond to the Gospel through love, service and care for others.
- Become active contributors to their school, parish and wider community.
